ArtNSoul SOE MLK Poetry Event :: Film

Dokk Savage :: “The Ryme”

On Sunday, 01.16.2011, I attended the ArtNSoul Society of Expression event in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.  This event is one of the largest spoken word events in the Southeast!  This years marks the  10th Anniversary of this event which was themed: Freedom Dreamer.

Spoken Word events are usually low-lit and this event was no different.  I knew that I was going to grab a camera but this time I was eager to pick up the film camera to see what it would do in such lighting. Through the night, I could hear digital camera firing off tons of shots! Then I would get up… wait for the right moment (I hoped)… and snap ONE shot… and sit down!  LOL on the inside knowing that whatever I just snapped, I won’t be able to see it until the roll of film is processed!

Below are a few examples of what I snapped.

Glenwood from Birmingham made the trip to share with us!

Kimeko :: “They call it Atlanta!”

Omar :: “They Shootin… Made You Look”

Dokk Savage :: “The Ryme”

During intermission, I saw Sonya & Sonja and I whisked them away to a side room to snap a few shots!  These were the two images that I care to share!

I’ve FALLEN back in love with film!   Like I said in my last blog, “The funny thing about film, is that you can’t get instant gratification by looking in your viewfinder.  But the anticipation of wanting to see the results is a priceless!  By not being able to check every picture, immediately after shooting it, you can focus on what you are about to photograph, rather than what you just shot.”  I couldn’t wait to get my film developed and review my contact sheet!  The grain in these B/W photos just give it that look that I was seeking.  Not that I’m going to stop shooting digital but until my next paid gig, you’ll definitely see more B&W film photos from Richie Carter Photography.

Shooting film is definitely going to make me a better digital photographer.  If you know you are shooting film, you must keep it in mind when composing your shot, to get the most out of shapes in the frame.

But for now,  If you’re looking for something different and/or are interested in a B&W photos like this, send me an email and we’ll see if we can swing it! They’re totally fun!!

Talk to you soon,
Richie
